The Loewe Puzzle bag is a geometric leather bag built from interlocking flat panels, designed by Jonathan Anderson and introduced in 2015. It comes in several sizes, from a mini that holds a phone and cards to a medium that carries a full working day, and it can be worn by hand, on the shoulder or across the body. If you are buying your first one, the small is the size to start with: it is the most versatile, and the easiest to find pre-owned.

Few designs of the past decade have been engineered so carefully, and few are so often misread when they change hands. Below you will find the sizes and what fits in each, the leathers, how to wear it, and the details a specialist checks before buying.

What makes the Loewe Puzzle bag different

Most handbags are designed as a front, a back and a gusset that joins them. The Puzzle is not. Its body is cut from a series of flat pieces of leather, each a different shape, joined along visible seams so that the bag reads as a set of planes rather than one continuous surface. Look at it side-on and you see triangles and trapezoids meeting at angles. Look at it from above and the zip runs off-centre. Anderson took over at the Spanish house, a leather workshop founded in Madrid in 1846, with a strong interest in craft and in how leather behaves when it is folded rather than moulded. The Puzzle is the clearest expression of that idea.

The construction has a practical consequence that surprises many new owners: the bag folds flat. Empty, it collapses along its seams into something close to an envelope, which makes it a clever travel companion. Filled, it springs back into its architectural shape. It is also why no two Puzzles ever look quite the same on the arm; the way you pack it changes its silhouette.

The branding is discreet. The house Anagram is debossed on a side panel rather than stamped across the front, and the hardware is kept to a minimum. That restraint is a large part of the appeal.

Colour-block and seasonal versions

Because every panel is cut separately, the Loewe Puzzle lends itself to colour. Over the years it has appeared in two-tone and three-tone combinations where each plane is a different shade, and these colour-block pieces are often the ones collectors search for once the classic tan and black have been covered. Our pre-owned Loewe Puzzle Medium in light blue and grey colour-block leather is a good example: the geometry is far more visible when the planes are different colours.

The house has also extended the family with spin-offs such as the Puzzle Fold tote, a softer and more casual shape that takes the folding idea further. They are separate designs, though, so if you are hunting for the original, check the listing title and the photographs from every angle.

Loewe Puzzle bag sizes compared

The names are straightforward, which is a relief after some houses. The figures below are the commonly published dimensions, given as width by height by depth. Treat them as about right rather than exact: sizes vary slightly by season and leather, and a soft grained version will measure a little differently from a crisp classic calfskin one.

Loewe Puzzle Mini

Dimensions: about 18 x 12.5 x 8 cm (7.1 x 4.9 x 3.1 in). Best for: evenings and hands-free days.

The mini is a bag for the evening or for days when you would rather not carry anything at all. It works best crossbody, where its proportions look deliberate rather than toy-like. A modern phone fits, though if yours is one of the largest models, check before committing: depth matters more than width here. An even smaller nano has appeared in some seasons and is best thought of as a charm with a strap.

Loewe Puzzle Small

Dimensions: about 24 x 16.5 x 10.5 cm (9.4 x 6.5 x 4.1 in). Best for: one bag that does almost everything.

If you ask around, the Loewe small Puzzle bag is the one most owners would buy again. It is large enough to carry the essentials without a struggle and small enough to wear across the body without looking like luggage. It is also the size where the geometry looks most balanced: the planes are big enough to read clearly, and the bag holds its shape well when lightly packed. If you can only own one Loewe Puzzle, this is it.

Loewe Puzzle Medium

Dimensions: about 29 x 18.5 x 12 cm (11.4 x 7.3 x 4.7 in). Best for: commuting and full days out.

The medium Puzzle bag is the working version. It takes a day's worth of belongings and still folds flat when emptied. Worn on the shoulder it sits neatly under the arm; worn crossbody it becomes a little sporty, which suits weekend dressing. If you commute with a laptop, though, this is not the bag for it. Pair it with a slim tote and let the Puzzle carry the things you reach for.

Loewe Puzzle Large

Dimensions: these vary by version, so check the listing measurements. Best for: travel and work, carried on the shoulder.

The Loewe Puzzle bag large is the rarest of the four on the pre-owned market. It is a shoulder bag first, with enough room for a small tablet and a scarf. Its scale makes the panel construction very visible, which is either exactly the point or slightly too much, depending on your taste.

Leathers and how they wear

The leather changes the character of a Loewe Puzzle more than the size does. Three finishes cover most of what you will see.

  • Classic calfskin. Smooth, firm and structured. This is the version that shows the geometry most crisply, and the one that holds its angles best over years. It does show scratches, but they soften with handling.
  • Soft grained calfskin. Slightly pebbled and more relaxed. The bag slouches a little more, and the grain hides light marks very well. A wise choice if you are hard on your bags.
  • Satin calfskin. A subtle sheen and a beautifully supple hand. It is lovely in the flesh, but it marks more readily and dislikes rain.

An expert detail: the edges of each panel are finished with edge paint, a thin coloured coating that seals the cut leather. On a well-loved Puzzle, the first signs of wear are almost always at these edges, particularly at the corners of the base and where the handle meets the body. Small cracks in edge paint are cosmetic and can be refreshed by a good leather specialist. Lifting or splitting along a seam is a different matter and worth asking about.

How to wear the Loewe Puzzle

The beauty of the Puzzle is that it changes its personality with the way you carry it. By hand, using the top handle, it looks polished and slightly formal: ideal with tailoring, a long coat or a simple dress. On the shoulder, with the strap shortened, it becomes the everyday version and sits comfortably against a knit or a trench. Across the body it turns relaxed and practical, which is where the mini and small shine.

Colour does a lot of the work. Tan and black are the classic neutrals and will go with almost anything. Seasonal brights are where the Puzzle shows its sense of humour: our pre-owned Loewe Puzzle in orange leather lifts a navy, grey or camel wardrobe without looking like a fashion statement for its own sake. With a bright Puzzle, keep everything else quiet and let the shape speak.

One styling mistake to avoid: overfilling. A stuffed Puzzle loses the planes that make it special and starts to look like a lumpy pouch. Carry a little less than you think you need, and the bag will repay you.

Buying a pre-owned Loewe Puzzle: what to check

Most of the Puzzles changing hands today are pre-owned, which is good news for buyers: the bag is well made and ages gracefully. Here is what a specialist looks at.

  • Shape when empty and when filled. A healthy Puzzle folds flat and springs back. One that has been stored folded for a long time can carry hard creases across the panels.
  • Edge paint and corners. Look closely at the base corners and the handle ends. Fine cracks are normal for age; exposed, fraying leather needs work.
  • Seams. The stitching between panels should be even and tight along its whole length, with no loose ends near the zip.
  • The zip. It runs along an angled line, so it takes more strain than on a square bag. It should glide without catching.
  • Strap and fixings. Check the strap clips, the leather around them and the length adjustment.
  • Interior. The lining should be clean, and any interior stamps should be crisp and neatly aligned.

Construction quality is one of the hardest things to fake convincingly on a Puzzle, because every angle has to line up. Even so, no single detail proves a bag's origin. We explain how we source and inspect each piece on our sourcing and authenticity page, and our guide to which current bag trends are becoming classics explains why the Puzzle has settled so firmly into the second category.

Care and storage

The Puzzle's party trick, folding flat, is also its main care trap. It is perfect for a suitcase, but a bag left folded on a shelf for months will set into creases. At home, store it upright and lightly filled with acid-free tissue so the panels hold their planes, inside the dust bag, away from direct sunlight and radiators. Keep the strap detached and loosely coiled so it does not leave an impression on the leather.

Wipe classic calfskin with a soft dry cloth after use. Avoid household cleaners and leave conditioning to a professional, as heavy creams can darken the edges. If your Puzzle gets caught in the rain, blot it, stuff it with tissue and let it dry slowly at room temperature. Our longer guide on how to store a designer bag so it survives a decade covers the rest.

If the Puzzle is not quite you

Loewe offers several other routes to the same craftsmanship. The Amazona, a soft structured holdall from the house archive, is roomier and more classic; our pre-owned Loewe Amazona 36 in purple, lilac and fuchsia shows how well it takes colour. For something softer, the drawstring Flamenco has a cult following, and for summer the woven basket bags are hard to beat. If you want a simple everyday tote, the new Loewe small calfskin tote in dark brown is the quiet option. Browse the full range in our Loewe shoulder bags edit.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Loewe Puzzle bag worth buying?

For most people, yes. It is beautifully made, recognisable without loud branding and versatile enough to wear three ways. Pre-owned, it ages well, and a well-kept example can give many years of service. The main reason not to buy one is if you prefer a soft, slouchy bag you can throw things into.

Which Loewe Puzzle size is the most popular?

The small. It balances capacity and proportion better than any other size, works crossbody and on the shoulder, and is the easiest to find on the pre-owned market.

Does the Loewe Puzzle really fold flat?

Yes. The panel construction lets the empty bag collapse along its seams, which makes it easy to pack in a suitcase. Just avoid storing it folded for long periods, as that can leave creases.

Can a laptop fit in a Loewe Puzzle?

Not in the mini, small or medium. A large may take a small tablet, depending on the version. If you need to carry a laptop, pair a Puzzle with a tote instead.

Whether you are drawn to a classic tan or a bold colour-block, the Puzzle is one of the most rewarding modern bags to own. Explore our Loewe collection to find new and pre-owned pieces from the house, each described honestly and photographed from every angle.
