The Celine Triomphe bag is a compact leather flap shoulder bag closed with the house's gold-tone Triomphe clasp, an archive motif revived after Hedi Slimane arrived in 2018. The Celine Luggage bag is the structured tote with flared side wings and a smiling front pocket, launched under Phoebe Philo around 2010. Choose the Triomphe for a polished, hands-free day bag, and the Luggage if you want a roomy, architectural tote.

They belong to the same house but to two very different moods. This guide explains where each came from, compares every size with approximate measurements, and shares what a specialist looks at when buying either one pre-owned.

Two icons, two eras of Celine

Celine was founded in Paris in 1945 and grew from made-to-measure children's shoes into ready-to-wear and leather goods. Its modern reputation, though, rests on two creative directors with opposite instincts. Phoebe Philo, who led the house from 2008, built a quiet, intellectual minimalism that made women feel understood rather than decorated; the Luggage was its emblem. Hedi Slimane, who arrived in 2018, brought a sharper, more Parisian and more overtly glamorous point of view, and he returned to the archive for a logo and a clasp. The Triomphe was the result.

One small change marks the boundary between these two eras, and it is useful when looking at pre-owned bags: under Slimane the house dropped the accent from its name, so Philo-era pieces are typically stamped with an accented É, and later pieces without it.

The Celine Triomphe bag: the story of the clasp

The Triomphe emblem, two interlaced Cs facing each other, dates to the early 1970s. The house story traces it to the chains that surround the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and the motif was used on canvas and hardware for decades before fading from view. Slimane brought it back as the centrepiece of a new flap bag, the Triomphe, and the house's coated canvas printed with the emblem became known as Triomphe canvas.

The Celine Triomphe bag itself is a neat, boxy flap shoulder bag. The flap closes under the clasp, which sits in the centre like a piece of jewellery, and the bag is carried on an adjustable leather strap. Its appeal is its compactness: it holds the essentials, sits close to the body and looks equally right with jeans or a dinner suit.

Teen Triomphe

Dimensions: about 18.5 x 14 x 6 cm (7.3 x 5.5 x 2.4 in). Best for: evenings and light days, worn across the body.

The Teen is the smaller of the two main sizes, and many people find it the more charming. It takes a phone, a card holder, keys and a lipstick. Worn crossbody, it has a slightly retro air that suits simple clothes.

Triomphe (medium)

Dimensions: about 22.5 x 16.5 x 7.5 cm (8.9 x 6.5 x 3 in). Best for: an everyday shoulder bag that still looks dressed.

The standard Triomphe adds room for a compact wallet and sunglasses. It is the size to choose if this will be your daily bag. On the shoulder it sits just at the waist, which is where the clasp looks its best.

Triomphe canvas and Cuir Triomphe

Beyond the flap bag, the emblem appears across a whole family. Triomphe canvas, a coated canvas printed with the motif, is used for totes, shoulder bags and small leather goods. Cuir Triomphe styles combine the canvas with calfskin trim. Our pre-owned Celine small bucket in Cuir Triomphe natural and tan canvas shows how relaxed the motif can look on a soft shape. The house's earlier Macadam coated canvas, another archive pattern, also turns up on vintage pieces: our pre-owned Celine Triomphe shoulder bag in white Macadam coated canvas with gold-tone clasp pairs the two.

The Celine Luggage bag: the bag of a decade

When the Luggage appeared early in Philo's tenure, it looked unlike anything else. Its body is a structured trapeze, its side panels flare out into wings, and a zipped pocket runs across the front just below two short handles. Seen head-on, the pocket and handles suggest a face, which is why it is so often called the smile bag. It became one of the defining bags of the early 2010s, carried by editors and clients who wanted luxury without a logo.

The Celine Luggage tote is more practical than its sculptural look suggests. The wings expand the capacity, the front pocket keeps a phone within reach, and the top zip keeps everything secure. Its main drawback is weight: in drummed calfskin, a full Luggage is a substantial thing to carry by hand.

Celine Luggage sizes compared

Celine Luggage sizes have names that confuse almost everyone, because the Mini is not small at all. The figures below are the commonly published dimensions, given as width by height by depth. They are approximate: sizes vary slightly by season and leather, and the wings change the width depending on how the bag is packed.

Nano Luggage

Dimensions: about 20 x 20 x 10 cm (7.9 x 7.9 x 3.9 in). Best for: wearing the Luggage shape across the body.

The Nano comes with a detachable shoulder strap, which sets it apart from the larger sizes, and it is the size that brought the bag to a new, younger audience. It holds more than its size suggests, thanks to the wings. Our pre-owned Celine Nano Luggage tote in yellow grained leather shows how well the shape takes a bright colour.

Micro Luggage

Dimensions: about 26 x 26 x 15 cm (10.2 x 10.2 x 5.9 in). Best for: an everyday handbag carried by hand or on the forearm.

The Micro is the size many owners consider the most balanced. It carries a day's essentials without the bulk of the Mini, and it has the proportions of the original in a more manageable scale.

Mini Luggage

Dimensions: about 32 x 32 x 17 cm (12.6 x 12.6 x 6.7 in). Best for: work and long city days.

Despite its name, the Mini is the classic working size and the one most associated with the bag's first wave of fame. Expect it to be heavy when full. Our Celine Mini Luggage in ochre yellow calfskin is new and unworn, a rare find in this size.

Medium Luggage and the Phantom

Dimensions: larger than the Mini and variable by version, so check the listing measurements. Best for: a carryall for work and travel.

The Medium is the largest of the line. A close relative, the Phantom, has wider wings and no front pocket, and its softer body slouches more; it is easy to mistake for a Luggage in photographs, so look for the pocket. Our new Celine Medium Luggage tote in grained calfskin is the version for those who want the full scale of the design.

Triomphe or Luggage: which one should you choose?

Think about how you carry a bag on an ordinary day. The Celine Triomphe bag is a shoulder and crossbody bag: hands free, close to the body, polished. It works for people who carry little and want their bag to look like a finishing touch. The Celine Luggage is a handbag in the old sense, carried by hand or on the forearm, and it rewards people who carry more and like a bag with presence. If you are still unsure, our guide tote or top handle: which one you will actually use helps you work out your habits before you buy.

Style matters too. The Triomphe looks Parisian and slightly retro; the Luggage looks architectural and minimal. Both have stayed in demand long after their first wave of fame.

Buying a pre-owned Celine Luggage or Triomphe: what to check

Both bags are well made and age gracefully, but they wear in different places. A specialist checks these points.

  • Luggage base corners. The bottom corners of a Luggage take the most knocks. Look for scuffing and worn edge paint.
  • Luggage handles. The handles darken with hand contact over the years. Even darkening is honest wear; cracking along the edges needs attention.
  • The front pocket zip. The smile pocket zip should run smoothly from end to end, with the leather around it lying flat.
  • The wings. They should flare evenly. A bag stored squashed can come with creased or collapsed wings.
  • The Triomphe clasp. The gold-tone metal shows fine scratches with use. It should sit flush and the flap should close cleanly beneath it.
  • Triomphe canvas edges. On canvas pieces, check the folds and edges for cracking in the coating.
  • Interior stamps. Look for a crisp, consistent stamp. The presence or absence of the accent helps place a bag in its era.

No single detail proves where a bag came from, and stamps and codes can be copied. We explain how we source and inspect each piece on our sourcing and authenticity page.

Care and storage

The Luggage needs support. Store it filled with acid-free tissue, especially in the wings, so it keeps its silhouette, and never stack other bags on top of it. The Triomphe needs less space but more care for its clasp: wrap the metal in soft tissue before putting the bag in its dust bag, so it cannot scratch the leather of the flap. Keep both away from direct sunlight, which fades pale calfskin quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Celine Triomphe bag worth it?

For a compact everyday bag, yes. It is well made, versatile and recognisable without being loud. Choose the Teen if you carry little and the standard size if it will be your daily bag.

What are the Celine Luggage sizes?

The main sizes are Nano, Micro, Mini and Medium. The Nano is about 20 cm wide, the Micro about 26 cm and the Mini about 32 cm, with the Medium larger still.

Which Celine Luggage size is best for everyday use?

The Micro for most people. It carries a day's essentials without the weight of the Mini. Choose the Nano if you want to wear it across the body.

Why is the Celine Luggage called the smile bag?

Seen from the front, the zipped pocket looks like a mouth and the handles above it like eyes, so the bag appears to smile.

Is the Celine Luggage tote still in style?

Yes. Its first wave of fame was in the early 2010s, but the design has become a modern classic, and pre-owned pieces from the Philo era are especially sought after.

Whether you are drawn to the polished Triomphe or the architectural Luggage, both are among the best bags the house has made. Explore our Celine collection to find new and pre-owned pieces, each described honestly and photographed from every angle.
