YSL Loulou Small, Toy, Medium or Large: A Saint Laurent Size Guide

The Loulou comes in four main sizes and one very different Puffer. Here is how they compare, what each one holds and why the small is the size most people choose.

The YSL Loulou small measures about 23 x 17 x 9 cm and is the size most people should start with: big enough for a phone, a card holder, keys and a lipstick, small enough to wear across the body on a doubled or single chain. Go down to the Toy if you carry almost nothing, and up to the Medium if you want a true everyday handbag.

The Loulou looks simple, but the size you choose changes its character more than with almost any other chain bag. A Toy feels like jewellery, a Medium feels like a handbag, and a Large is something else again. This guide sets out the differences honestly, with the details a specialist checks before recommending one.

What defines the Saint Laurent Loulou handbag

The Loulou arrived in the late 2010s, early in Anthony Vaccarello's tenure as creative director, and takes its name from Loulou de la Falaise, the long-time muse and collaborator of Yves Saint Laurent who designed jewellery and accessories for the house. It is a fitting tribute: the bag is easy, a little louche and very Parisian.

Three features make it recognisable. The quilting is stitched in a chevron pattern often described as Y-quilting, so the leather puffs into a series of V shapes rather than diamonds. The flap carries the interlocking metal logo designed by Cassandre. And the chain is a sliding strap with a leather shoulder pad that can be doubled for a short shoulder drop or let out long for crossbody wear.

Whether you search for the YSL, Saint Laurent or St Laurent Loulou bag, you are looking at the same family. What changes is the size, the leather and the hardware finish, and those three choices are where the real decisions lie.

The detail most people miss

Run your eye along the chevrons. On a well made Loulou, the points of each V line up across the flap and continue cleanly over the front of the body, so the pattern reads as one continuous design when the bag is closed. Misaligned quilting at the flap edge is something an experienced eye notices immediately.

YSL Loulou small, Toy, Medium and Large compared

The figures below are the commonly published approximate dimensions. Sizes vary slightly by season and leather, so check the measurements on each listing before you decide.

SizeApprox. dimensions (W x H x D)What fitsWho it suits
Toyabout 20 x 14 x 8 cm (8 x 5.5 x 3 in)Phone, card holder, keys, lipstickEvenings, petite frames, minimal carry
Smallabout 23 x 17 x 9 cm (9 x 6.5 x 3.5 in)Phone, compact wallet, keys, sunglasses in a soft pouchMost people as a first Loulou, day to night
Mediumabout 32 x 22 x 11.5 cm (12.5 x 8.5 x 4.5 in)Full wallet, sunglasses case, small makeup pouch, phone, keysEveryday use, the office, taller frames
Largeabout 38 x 26 cm (15 x 10 in), with a deeper gussetA small tablet, a book, a scarf and daily essentialsThose who want one large bag to carry everything

A good test before buying: empty your current bag onto a table and keep only what you genuinely carry every day. If it fits within a 23 by 17 cm rectangle, the small will serve you well. If it does not, choose the Medium rather than overstuffing a smaller one, because the quilting distorts when the bag is forced closed.

Loulou Toy

Dimensions: about 20 x 14 x 8 cm (8 x 5.5 x 3 in). Best for: evenings and anyone who carries the bare minimum.

The Toy is the most playful size, worn high on the shoulder or across the body like a piece of jewellery. A modern phone fits, along with a card holder and keys, but little else. The Loulou Toy shoulder bag in chevron quilted lambskin shows how the proportions concentrate the quilting into a dense, tactile pattern. If you are weighing it against a wallet on chain, the Toy has more depth and a real gusset, so it holds its shape better when full.

Loulou Small

Dimensions: about 23 x 17 x 9 cm (9 x 6.5 x 3.5 in). Best for: a first Loulou that works from morning to night.

The Saint Laurent Loulou small is the sweet spot of the range. It is large enough to be practical, with room for a compact wallet beside your phone, yet still small enough to look elegant at dinner. Doubled, the chain sits neatly on the shoulder; single, it falls to the hip as a crossbody. The Loulou small shoulder bag in chevron quilted lambskin is a clear example of the classic proportions. If you are deciding on a Yves Saint Laurent small Loulou bag as your first designer piece, this is the size that will see the most wear.

Loulou Medium

Dimensions: about 32 x 22 x 11.5 cm (12.5 x 8.5 x 4.5 in). Best for: everyday use as a main handbag.

The Medium is where the Loulou becomes a proper handbag. It carries a full wallet, sunglasses in their case and a small makeup pouch, and the larger body gives the quilting a softer, more relaxed slouch. Worn doubled on the shoulder it is comfortable for a long day. Suede versions, such as the Loulou medium chain bag in brown quilted suede, bring a warmer, seventies mood to the shape, though they ask for more care in wet weather.

Loulou Large

Dimensions: about 38 x 26 cm (15 x 10 in), with a deeper gusset. Best for: those who want a single, generous bag for work and travel.

The Large is the least common choice and the most practical. It holds a small tablet and a book alongside the essentials, and it reads as a confident, grown-up bag. The trade-off is weight: a large quilted leather body with a full metal chain is heavier than it looks, so try it on your shoulder before committing.

Loulou Puffer

Best for: anyone who loves the Loulou spirit but wants something softer and more relaxed.

The Puffer is a different bag rather than a different size. Its quilting is oversized and pillowy, the leather is supple, and the overall look is slouchier and more casual than the structured classic. It comes in several sizes, including clutch and Toy versions such as the Loulou Puffer Toy clutch in green quilted suede. Choose it if the original feels too polished for your wardrobe.

Leather and hardware choices

Once you have the size, two choices shape how the bag ages.

Calfskin or lambskin. Calfskin is firmer and more resistant to scratches, so the quilting stays crisp for longer. Lambskin is softer and more luxurious to the touch, with a deeper puff to the chevrons, but it marks more readily and shows fingernail scratches. If this will be a daily bag, calfskin is the safer choice. Suede and raffia appear seasonally and are best treated as fair weather pieces.

Hardware tone. The logo and chain are usually offered in a warm gold, an aged bronze, silver, or a tonal black. Gold reads dressier; silver feels cooler and more modern; tonal black is the most discreet. Match it to the jewellery you wear most, since the chain sits close to your neck and hand. The Loulou shoulder bag in black chevron quilted calfskin shows how classic black leather and gold hardware work together.

How to wear the Loulou

The Loulou is at home with the house's own vocabulary: a black blazer, slim trousers, a silk blouse, denim and boots. Doubled on the shoulder it sits neatly under the arm; worn long, it crosses the body for travel and busy streets. The smaller sizes look sharpest worn high, with the bag resting at the waist rather than hanging at the hip.

For evenings, the Toy and the small slip easily from day to night. If you want something even more minimal for dinner, our comparison of the wallet on chain from Chanel, Saint Laurent and Dior looks at the flatter alternative.

Care and what to check when buying pre-owned

A Loulou ages well when it is looked after, and its weak points are predictable.

  • Corners. The four lower corners rub first. Check for scuffing, colour loss or shiny patches.
  • Quilting. Over time the chevrons can flatten, particularly on lambskin. Store the bag stuffed with tissue so the puff holds.
  • Chain contact points. Where the chain runs through the eyelets, it can rub the leather and leave marks. Look closely at the edges of the body near the strap fittings.
  • Logo and hardware. Scratches on the metal logo are common and usually cosmetic. Tarnish or flaking plating is a more significant sign of age.
  • Flap and closure. The flap should close flat and the magnetic closure should catch firmly.

Houses inspect bags by looking at the whole object together: materials, stitching, hardware weight and finish, and interior stamps. No single feature proves anything, which is why we describe every piece in detail. Our Sourcing and Authenticity page explains how we source and inspect each bag.

Frequently asked questions

What fits in a YSL Loulou small?

A phone, a card holder or compact wallet, keys, a lipstick and sunglasses in a soft pouch. A full size long wallet and a hard sunglasses case together will be a tight squeeze.

Is the YSL Loulou small or Toy better?

The small is more versatile because it holds a compact wallet and works for daytime. The Toy is lighter and more of an evening or accessory bag. If you can only have one, choose the small.

Can you wear the Loulou crossbody?

Yes. The sliding chain can be worn doubled on the shoulder or extended as a single strap across the body. The crossbody drop suits most heights on the small and Toy.

Is the Loulou heavy?

The Toy and small are comfortable for a full day. The Medium and Large are noticeably heavier because of the leather and the metal chain, so try them on the shoulder if you can.

Is the Loulou a good investment?

It is a well established design that has stayed in the collection for several years, which supports demand for pre-owned pieces in good condition. Our article on which designer bags actually hold their value explains what really drives resale.
