The Chanel Gabrielle bag is a quilted hobo with a soft aged-calfskin body set on a rigid base, carried on a double chain that you can wear on one shoulder, across the body or over both shoulders. It was made as a small, medium and large hobo and as a backpack. It has largely left boutique collections, so buying one today usually means buying pre-owned, and the small hobo is the size most people find easiest to live with.
It is also one of the most divisive bags Chanel has made in recent memory, which is exactly why it rewards a closer look. Below we cover where it came from, how each size wears, what goes wrong with it over time, and how to choose a good pre-owned example.
The story of the Chanel Gabrielle bag
Karl Lagerfeld introduced the Gabrielle in 2017 and named it after the founder herself: Gabrielle was Coco Chanel's given name. That is why searchers type it both ways, and why the Gabrielle Chanel bag felt like a statement of intent from the start. Its launch campaign featured house ambassadors including Kristen Stewart and Pharrell Williams, and the message was clear: this was a Chanel for movement, not for the opera.
The design broke with house habits. Instead of a flap, a turn-lock and a structured body, the Gabrielle had a slouchy quilted top, a zip closure and a flat, rigid oval base. Its profile is often compared to a vintage binocular case, and once you see it you cannot unsee it. The double chain mixed metals, usually gold-tone with silver-tone or ruthenium, woven through with leather and joined by a leather shoulder piece. Mixed hardware was rare at Chanel then, and it remains the quickest way to recognise the bag across a room.
The Gabrielle was produced season after season in new colours and materials, from aged calfskin to tweed and metallic leathers, before quietly fading from the boutiques. It never became a permanent classic in the way of the flap bag, but it has kept a loyal following among people who find the quilted flap too formal.
Chanel Gabrielle bag sizes compared
Published measurements vary by a centimetre or two between seasons and sources, partly because the soft top settles differently on every bag. Use these as approximate guides rather than exact specifications.
| Size | Approximate dimensions | What fits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gabrielle Small Hobo | about 20 cm wide, 15 to 16 cm tall, 8 cm deep (7.9 x 6 x 3.1 in) | Phone, card holder, keys, lipstick, small sunglasses | Everyday crossbody wear, most frames |
| Gabrielle Medium Hobo | about 28 cm wide, 20 cm tall, 9 cm deep (11 x 7.9 x 3.5 in) | A full-size wallet, sunglasses in a case, a small pouch, a paperback | A day bag for people who carry more |
| Gabrielle Large Hobo | about 33 cm wide, 24 cm tall, 11 cm deep (13 x 9.4 x 4.3 in) | A small tablet, a light layer, the day's essentials | Travel and long days, taller frames |
| Gabrielle Backpack | about 20 to 23 cm wide depending on version | Similar to a small or medium hobo | Hands-free city days |
Gabrielle Small Hobo
Dimensions: about 20 cm wide, 15 to 16 cm tall and 8 cm deep (7.9 x 6 x 3.1 in). Best for: crossbody wear every day, and anyone buying their first Gabrielle.
The small is the sweet spot. It holds a phone, a card holder, keys and a lipstick, and its rigid base means it stands up on its own when you set it down, a small luxury that soft bags rarely offer. Worn crossbody it sits at the hip without bulk; doubled on one shoulder it reads as a compact evening bag.
It is also the size you will find most often. We currently hold several pre-owned examples, including a Gabrielle Small Hobo in black with ruthenium and gold-tone hardware, which is the classic combination, and a Gabrielle Small Hobo in red aged calfskin for anyone who wants colour.

Gabrielle Medium Hobo
Dimensions: about 28 cm wide, 20 cm tall and 9 cm deep (11 x 7.9 x 3.5 in). Best for: a working day bag for those who carry a full wallet and more.
The medium gives a noticeably wider opening and fits a long wallet, sunglasses in their case and a small cosmetics pouch. It is also the size where the main complaint about the Gabrielle begins to show: the soft upper has more height to support, so the sides can fold inwards when the bag is half empty. Keeping a slim pouch inside to fill the space helps a great deal.
Gabrielle Large Hobo
Dimensions: about 33 cm wide, 24 cm tall and 11 cm deep (13 x 9.4 x 4.3 in). Best for: travel days and taller frames who want a relaxed Chanel shoulder bag.
The large is the least common and the most debated. It carries a small tablet, a light layer and a full day's kit, but full, it is heavy on the chain, and the slouch is most pronounced. Buy one if you love the look and will use the capacity; otherwise the medium is easier.
Gabrielle Backpack
Dimensions: roughly 20 to 23 cm wide depending on the version, with a footprint close to the small or medium hobo. Best for: city days when you want both hands free.
The backpack uses the same double chain, which goes over both shoulders, so the design needed very little adaptation. It is a lighter-hearted piece and less common on the pre-owned market than the hobos, which makes condition even more important when one appears.
How to wear a Chanel Gabrielle purse
The double chain is the clever part. Worn together on one shoulder, the chains make the Gabrielle a conventional shoulder bag. Separated and placed on both shoulders, the bag rests flat against your back or front, so the weight is spread. Across the body, the leather shoulder piece sits where the chain would otherwise dig in.
A few styling notes from experience:
- The mixed metals mean the Gabrielle works with any jewellery. You do not need to choose between gold and silver.
- Black and navy aged calfskin are the most versatile and, as a rule, the most sought after. Bright colours and tweeds read more seasonal.
- Because the shape is casual, the Gabrielle looks best with denim, knits and tailoring worn loosely. With very formal dressing, a classic flap or a Coco Handle is the more natural partner.
If you are comparing it with smaller Chanel chain pieces, our guide to the Wallet on Chain from Chanel, Saint Laurent and Dior covers the compact alternative.
Is the Chanel Gabrielle hobo heavy?
Heavier than it looks, yes. The rigid base and two chains add weight before you put anything inside, and the medium and large feel it most. The small is comfortable for a full day; the large is best on both shoulders. If your shoulders are sensitive, test the weight with your own daily contents before committing, or choose the small.

Buying a pre-owned Chanel Gabrielle hobo bag: what to check
Every bag style has its own weak points. These are the ones we look at first on a Gabrielle:
- The base edges. The rigid oval base is the bag's foundation and its most exposed part. Scuffs along the rim and corners are the most common wear, and they are visible because the base is smooth leather.
- The side walls. Some softening is natural with aged calfskin. Deep, permanent creases at the point where the soft body meets the base suggest the bag was stored collapsed.
- The chain. Look where the chain passes through the eyelets: plating can rub thin there, and on mixed-metal chains a worn link stands out. Check the leather woven through the chain for drying or cracking.
- The shoulder piece. The leather pad takes all the friction from clothing. Darkening is normal; peeling edges are not.
- The zip and interior. The zip should run smoothly around the curve. Check the lining for pen marks and the interior pocket for stretching.
- Identification. Gabrielle bags generally carry a serial sticker inside and came with a matching card; later production may have a microchip instead. Our guide to Chanel serial numbers, stickers and cards explains how to read them. Treat any code as one clue among many, because stickers and cards can be copied.

Is the Gabrielle a good buy today?
For the right person, very much so. Because it was never adopted as a permanent classic, second-hand prices sit well below those of the flap bags and the newer Chanel 22, which makes the Gabrielle one of the more approachable routes into a Chanel chain bag. Our own pre-owned small hobos currently start from $3,992.99, for example this black Gabrielle Small Hobo with a multicolour chain.
The trade-off is that it is a style choice more than an investment. Its value depends heavily on condition, colour and size, with black small hobos in leather the steadiest. If resale is your priority, our article on which designer bags actually hold their value sets out what really drives prices. If you simply love the shape, now is a sensible moment to buy one in good condition.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Chanel Gabrielle bag discontinued?
It has largely disappeared from Chanel boutique collections in recent seasons, so most Gabrielle bags available today are pre-owned. That also means condition and completeness matter more than ever.
What size Chanel Gabrielle is best?
The small hobo suits most people. It holds the essentials, stands on its own rigid base, and is the most comfortable on the chain. Choose the medium if you carry a full-size wallet every day.
Can you wear the Gabrielle crossbody?
Yes. The double chain can be worn across the body, on one shoulder, or split over both shoulders, and the leather shoulder piece keeps it comfortable.
Why does my Gabrielle lose its shape?
The soft quilted upper sits on a rigid base, so when the bag is half empty the sides fold inwards. Store it stuffed with acid-free paper or a soft insert and keep a slim pouch inside when you carry it.
Is the Chanel Gabrielle a good investment?
It is better seen as a stylish, relatively accessible Chanel than as an investment piece. Black leather small hobos in excellent condition hold value best; tweed and seasonal colours tend to sell for less.
